Title: Central values and moments of L-functions

Abstract:
We give some historical introduction of and background to the study of L-functions by means of the Riemann Zeta function, with the goal of explaining some of the tools and ideas that generalise to modern research in analytic number theory. We finish by presenting recent work on certain averages of the central value of higher degree L-functions.
