Mathematics Colloquium: "Mathematical social sciences" is NOT an oxymoron!

We associate mathematics with helping to advance the biological, engineering, and physical sciences. Currently, however, mathematics, such as symmetry groups, analysis, representation theory, and some topology are beginning to make advances and answer mysteries from the social sciences. This includes topics from economics and political science, such as game theory, voting, evolutionary processes and decisions, and from psychology, such as the "center-surround" color perception mystery. No background in any of these social science issues is needed.
