Abstract: In this talk, I will discuss two related pieces of work. In the first, I study “contour completion” — a task performed with relative ease by our visual system — as a feature extraction problem in image processing. I will discuss a based variational model, its analytical structure and then present our simulational results. I will also discuss my current work in visual neuroscience, in which I have constructed a neuronal network model of primary visual cortex, and used this model to study important functions in visual perception such as orientation and spatial frequency tuning.
