Assistant Professor, Bala Krishnamoorthy, Svetlana Lockwood, and Michael Griswold, Dean of the College of Sciences

Svetlana Lockwood is a student at Washington State University who is double-majoring in Mathematics and Computer Science. She is one of only six students from the state of Washington to receive the prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for 2009-2010.

From the summer of 2008 to the present, Ms. Lockwood has been a participant in the National Science Foundation Undergraduate Biology and Mathematics (UBM) Program at WSU. This is a program designed to enhance undergraduate education and training in biological and mathematical sciences. She has been working with Bala Krishnamoorthy, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics, on methods to select optimal training sets for developing scoring functions for predicting various protein sequence-structure-function correlations. Previously (in the summer of 2007), Ms. Lockwood worked with faculty from the School of EECS on the idea of automated living environments with voice-user interfaces. The goal of this work is to allow an aging population the ability to maintain an independent lifestyle in their own home rather than in a traditional assisted living environment. In addition to her research, she is active in the Bio Math Club and works as a tutor in the College of Engineering and Architecture Tutoring Lab.

Her research poster (detailing the work on protein scoring functions) recently received first place in the Interdisciplinary/Mathematics division of the 6th College of Sciences Undergraduate Research Poster Competition (April 2009).

Ms. Lockwood's career goal is to obtain a Ph.D. in Computer Science. She then plans to conduct research in bioinformatics, mathematics, computer science, and teach at the university level.
