Lesson 4: Which voting method is best?

There are lots of possible voting methods. We have seen three so far and you can probably think of many more. We'll encounter a few more of them in Lesson 6.

Since there are so many possible ways to vote, which one should we use - which one is best? If all of the common methods gave the same ranking it wouldn't matter. But as we have seen with just one simple example, the methods of plurality, run-off and Borda can give very different results. And these are three commonly used methods.

If we're going to look for a best method, we need some way to recognize it when we find it. We need to set down some reasonable criteria which any "fair" voting method must meet.
