In addition to the two primary advisers, the joint PhD/MS option student
should, as early as possible, set up degree committees in both Mathematics and
the MS degree granting unit. Normally, the PhD committee in Mathematics will
consist of three to five faculty members while an MS committee is comprised of
three faculty members. While the primary advisers should always be different,
when appropriate, a faculty member from either department may serve on both
committees. The two committees, however, will generally function independently
of each other in terms of how they carry out their
duties for the respective
degrees.
