Students should complete the required course work for both the PhD degree in
mathematics and the MS degree in their chosen discipline for graduation. It
should be noted that all departments have minimum course work requirements for
admission into their MS degree programs. Hence, acceptance into the conjoint
PhD/MS option depends considerably upon the extent to which an individual
applicant meets such minimum requirements. Although, one might be allowed to
take certain make-up courses in order to meet the minimum course work criteria
for the MS degree program, this is not automatic. Generally, the PhD/MS option
is not recommended to those who need to take more than four make-up courses for
securing approval from the MS degree granting unit.
