Courses and Hours


The course work requirements for the PhD in Mathematics with Teaching Emphasis are as follows. A candidate must successfully complete 72 hours of approved coursework. At least 34 semester hours must be graded coursework and numbered 500 or above (except for up to 9 hours of 400-level graded coursework.) All doctoral students are required to take one hour of Math 500, Proseminar.

The coursework must include the following courses:

Core: Math 501, 511, 531
Foundation in Mathematics (3 courses from the following): Math 502, 503, 505, 507, 509, 512, 525, 544, 555
Educational Foundations and Research Methodologies: Stat 530 (Applied Linear Models), EdRes 563 (Principles of Research), EdRes 564 (Qualitative Research), and at least 2 credits of EdAd 538 (Education Research Lab).

The following courses are recommended: EdPsy (Advanced Educational Psychology), EdPsy 508 (Educational Statistics), EdRes 562 (Education, Research, and Epistemology), EdRes 565 (Quantitative Research), Math 532, Math 534, Math 443, and Math 556. It is also recommended that the student take two or more additional graded math courses numbered 500 or above to strengthen the mathematical foundations.
