A research assistant is usually
assigned to a particular member of the faculty, who then directs his/her work
as assistant. In some departments research assistants often literally assist
the professor in research, but in mathematics this is seldom feasible and the
research assistant is often engaged, in effect, on a separate project which may
be more closely related to his/her thesis plans than to anything else.
