If you are using Mozilla will need to configure Mozilla's prefrences in order to read a pdf file from the Internet.
Open Mozilla, press Edit -> Preferences
On the left side of the Preferences pop-up window, under Navigator, click "Helper Applications."
On the right side of this same window click the box called "New Type..."
Enter the following information:
Click "OK"
You should now be able to view pdf files from the Internet.
