Professional Environment:

Washington State University is a land-grant research institution with an enrollment of approximately 17,000 students including 2,000 graduate students situated on 600 acres with about 100 major buildings.

The Department of Mathematics is the largest department in the College of Sciences. The Department currently has 39 faculty members, and 40 graduate students. The department has excellent computing capabilities with modern workstations. The entire Pullman campus is connected by WSUnet, a new high-speed communication/data network. The Information Technology Center of the University provides access to a VAX cluster, and a specialized computer laboratory for molecular sciences.

Community and Surroundings:

Pullman [1][2], a university town of about 23,500 is located in the heart of southeastern Washington State's Palouse region. It offers a congenial, small-community living environment. The campus activities at Washington State University and the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho, 8 miles to the east, provide a varied cultural, athletic and scientific environment. The surrounding area provides year around outdoor recreational opportunities. Spokane, Washington, located 75 miles to the north, provides urban amenities.
