Mathematics Department Computers

The department of Mathematics has around 140 computers available for faculty and student use. Each has different properties and functions within the system. In addition, the department has a 100Mbit network with a high-speed connection to the campus backbone.

Research

The Department has about 80 computers dedicated to faculty and graduate student research. These range from comparatively fast DEC servers with large amounts of memory, to simple PCs on desktops. Most faculty are able to have Unix workstations if they want them. Graduate students all have Linux computers in their offices, and have access to Windows machines in a separate laboratory.

Students

Our instructional environment comprises three instructional laboratories - one containing Linux computers that run Mathematica, Maple, and Matlab, one with Windows computers, and a third with dual-boot computers. Our Windows 2000 computers run Math Education software and multimedia software for differential equations and Calculus. The Linux machines all run PVM, and hence constitute the closest thing the Department has to a parallel computer.
