Using the Scanner in the Newton Lab

1. Place the image face down on the scanner.
2. Log into the computer.
3. Type gimp at the prompt.
4. Go to: File>Acquire>XSane: DeviceDialog... (accept the XSane license).
5. The "Preview Expression 800:sg0" window pops up. Press the "Acquire Preview" button on this screen and the scanner will display a preview of the image.
6. At this point, the image is not clear. In the "XSane 0.77 Expression 800" pop-up menu, under "XSane options," change it from Binary to Color. Press the start button in this box and the image will be scanned.
7. Right click on the "Untitled-0.0" image. Press: File>Save As>filename.
8. If the image is a photo, save it as a jpeg. If the image is of hand-written notes, save it as a .png file. The image will be saved to your /usr1 directory.
9. Remember to remove the image from the scanner when you are finished.
