2015 Statistics Poster Competition

Jefferson Elementary School, Pullman, Washington

Taking statistics to young children, clinical assistant professor Dean Johnson organized a 2015 statistics poster competition for 4th and 5th grade students at Jefferson Elementary School in Pullman, Washington. Students demonstrated the basics of collecting, summarizing, and analyzing data to address questions of their interest. Dr. Libby Knott, Dr. Sergey Lapin, instructor Mark Lesperance, and Dr. Charles Moore judged the posters and awarded prizes. Prizes were provided by the Department of Mathematics at WSU, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratores, Palouse Discovery Science Center, Pullman Aquatics Center, and Zeppos Bowling Alley. The prizes included:

  • Math books and puzzles
  • Bowling gift cards
  • Certificates for a free visit to the Science Center
  • Certificates for a free visit to the Aquatic Center
  • Certificates of participation printed by Schweitzer Engineeering

As a result of the local contest, fifth grade competitor Ryan Holder's poster was sent on to the National American Statistical Association poster contest and Ryan's poster won first prize in the national contest.
