Pi Day - March 14th 1:59 p.m. (3.14159)

Pi Day is an unofficial holiday held to celebrate the mathematical constant, Pi. Pi Day is observed on March 14th. A quick estimation of pi is 22/7; a much better one is 355/113 (note the memorable pattern of the digits); an even better estimate than that is 3.141592654. Or, you could just press the "pi" key on your calculator. Who was born on March 14th? Why, Albert Einstein and Waclaw Sierpinski (Sierpinski's Triangle), of course.

On March 14th, 2007, the Department of Mathematics held its "second" annual Pi Day celebration! This year, we invited the entire campus to celebrate Pi by joing us for pie! People from many different departments came to visit and we enjoyed every minute of it. We sang songs about Pi and ate a delicious variety of pies (cookie fruit pizza pie, apple and cherry, lemon, coconut, khalua cream, chocolate silk and even some homemade varieties). For those who hate pie, we had carrot cake! One staff member brought home-roasted coffee!! Even though this was spring break with very few students, we were happy to have a good turnout because everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy pie on Pi Day!

If you are feeling blue that you missed having pie with us you can join us next year on March 14, 2008. We will see you then!
