Pi Day - March 14th 1:59 p.m. (3.14159)

Pi Day is an unofficial holiday held to celebrate the mathematical constant, Pi. Pi Day is observed on March 14th. A quick estimation of pi is 22/7; a much better one is 355/113 (note the memorable pattern of the digits); an even better estimate than that is 3.141592654. Or, you could just press the "pi" key on your calculator. Who was born on March 14th? Why, Albert Einstein and Waclaw Sierpinski (Sierpinski's Triangle), of course.

In 2006, the Department of Mathematics celebrated Pi Day by singing songs about Pi, eating a delicious variety of pies and having an overall good time. In spite of so many students being gone on spring break, the remaining faithful and true joined in to celebrate.

Mark your calendar for March 14th and join us for Pi(e), in the Neill Hall first floor lobby from 1:59 pm to 3:30 pm. Have some fun and start memorizing the decimals of pi! Photos from last year's celebration may be seen below. Click on any photo to enlarge it.
