Colloquium: Solving Polynomial Equations

Abstract:Many applications in science and engineering are modeled more accurately using polynomial equations and inequalities as opposed to linear or differential equations. Thus methods for solving polynomial equations impact many disciplines and are (in a theoretical sense) the central pursuit of the classical field of algebraic geometry. With the advent of computer science and modern computers, efficient algorithms for solving polynomial systems have received a new emphasis. In this talk, I will give a necessarily biased survey of some of the more recent and exciting developments in this old and fundamental area of mathematics.
