Mathematics Colloquium: ALEKS -- Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces

2009-04-02

4:10 p.m. Neill Hall 5W

Sandy Cooper

Abstract: ALEKS is an on-line learning environment based on knowledge space theory. The theoretical foundation will be explored by defining a knowledge structure, by discussing how a knowledge structure is built, and by illustrating how a knowledge state is uncovered within a knowledge structure. We will then turn our discussion to the on-line learning environment, ALEKS. We will look at how ALEKS is structured as a cycle of assessment and learning, examine some of the built-in options that allow the instructor to tailor the system to his or her course, and will review some of the administrative features and how they can be used to guide instructional choices. Finally, we will discuss how it is being used here in our precalculus and calculus classes.
