Mathematics Colloquium: Learning About the Art of Teaching Mathematics by Examining Others' Perspectives

2008-09-09

4:10 pm Neill Hall 5W

Kimberly Vincent

Abstract: As a PhD candidate in mathematics I was curious why the attrition rate for women taking mathematics was so high. To answer this question I conducted research for my dissertation to understand women's attitudes toward mathematics. This began my habit of examining how others' think about and do mathematics. The more I examine these perspectives the more my teaching evolves. I will discuss the various aspects of my job and how I turn each into a learning experience on improving how mathematics is taught. I will include how to assess with writing, discourse as well as how teachers and professionals contribute to my understanding.
