Applied Seminar: Modeling Multiciliary Beating

Abstract: An integrative model of multiciliary beating will be presented in this talk. This model is an extension of Dillon and Fauci's work on an integrative model of internal axoneme mechanics and external fluid dynamics in ciliary beating. We model the axonemes using the simplified Dillon-Fauci approach in their previous work. This model, based upon the immersed boundary method, couples the internal force generation of the molecular motors through the passive elastic structure with the external fluid mechanics governed by the Navier-Stokes equations. Computer simulations of multiciliary beating and interesting applications will be presented and discussed in this talk. This project is a joint work with Professors Lisa Fauci, Tulane University, Robert Dillon and Charlotte Omotto, Washington State University.
